I had the good fortune to speak at Start Up Weekend Des Moines held at The Impromptu Studios downtown (run by the one and only Dan Shipton). Shane Reiser was the go-to guy who helped set everything up and did a fantastic job. I also met Clint Nelson of Start Up Weekend, an entrepreneurs entrepreneur if I ever met one. It was he and his business partner's foresight that has created literally hundreds of start up businesses over the past few years. What struck me as particularly interesting was the fervor at which the teams were working. It was a quiet but intense calm as every member of the team had their task to do and went about doing it with such focus and determination. Think about what they're undertaking -- in 3 days, the teams (many of whom know no one else on their team) take an idea to a product or service offering using nothing but their own know-how. It's an awesome example of the entrepreneurial spirit in the US. If you've ever told yourself, "I can't start a business" consider participating in the next Start Up Weekend. The words "I can't" will be forever removed from your vocabulary. True story.
