One of my grandparents used to say, "you know you have two ears and one mouth for a reason! You should listen twice as much as you speak!" Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain have both been credited with the saying, "Better to remain silent and appear a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt." Even Dale Carnegie in How To Win Friends And Influence People says you should listen more and talk less to build a fantastic network of fans and supporters. So why is it that in this age of noise, there are so many people out there that still believe the way into someone's head, heart, or wallet is to railroad them with information that may or may not be pertinent? Especially when it is so easy to ask the right questions, deliver the needed message, and keep the idle chatter and mind-numbing droning to a minimum! Jeff Garrison points out in a June blog post the notion of not hi-jacking a conversation and a great example happened the other day in a meeting -- a "well-respected" senior member of a company called a meeting and I was invited. He did ALL the talking, never once asking a question that engaged the rest of us. I left the meeting wanting an hour of my life back. Chris Brogan talks about listening as well when it comes to using Social Media. He makes the point Google is a great place to listen. Think about it, we type in a search (asking a question) and the response that we get from Google are the answers to the question coming from the people who are talking the loudest (ie -- most savvy SEO experts, bloggers, etc.). Are you listening yet? I had the privilege of having lunch with the Converstation Master, Mike Sansone this week. It's not hard to listen when the guy is spewing gold nuggets of how to be yourself online AND listen at the same time. In Mike's postListening To The Conversation, he convinced me that I should be spending time not only creating my own blog content but helping spread the message of others that are saying the same things. I'm tracking with you, Mike! I spent my hour the past two days and feel all the more enlightened AND part of a community. The funny thing about listening, just as the senior exec would've found out in our meeting, is you can learn a great deal without saying much. Just like the man who went to get new hearing aids: Seems an elderly gentleman had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100%. The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, “Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again.” To which the gentleman said, “Oh, I haven’t told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I’ve changed my will three times!” Take part of your day today and LISTEN!!!!
