BABL 031: Shannon Ryan on The Heavy Purse
Shannon and I are kindred spirits — her father taught her some valuable financial lessons at the age of 13 and those lessons instilled a passion in her to teach others money for the rest of her life.
As the author of The Heavy Purse, a book for kids, a blog, and the host of a new podcast called Financially Sound, Shannon spends her days as a Certified Financial Planner helping individuals reach their own version of financial freedom.
On the podcast, Shannon talks about her dad and his influence on her life. He was a surgeon who was very analytical in his job, yet had a very high EQ and wanted to make sure Shannon made decisions that she felt good about. To him, it was about living life according to core values, something he passed to Shannon.
Around 12:00, Shannon talks about making a shift from working for a big corporation to buying a financial planning firm and deciding how her values would shape her new business.
Her two books, The Heavy Purse and The Lemonade Stand, she wrote as picture books to help teach kids financial lessons before bed or in the nooks and crannies of the day.
At the 17:00 mark, Shannon relays a story about her daughter planning her own birthday party, doing it with absolute joy, and learning some valuable money lessons along the way. Her daughters are responsible for buying their own clothes and school supplies (allowance provided), but the lessons Shannon relays along the way are priceless.
Shannon’s clients hear something from her regularly and that is to spend money joyously. To do so, we must understand what is most important to us, what we value, and what may be standing in our way. (23:00)
“Robo-advisors” are good, according to Shannon, but it misses the mark on what’s important to you about your money. This is why it’s important to work with an advisor.
A great discussion at the end of the podcast popped up about raising kids intelligently about money. Shannon is dialed in with the lessons she’s teaching her daughters and WE could learn a lot from her!
